This weekend I attended the HONG NOR CUP which would cater for 3 classes of racing 1/8th rally-X, 1/8th Truggy’s and CRT.5 1/12th scale Truggy and for me it turned out to be the best meeting I have been to this year. There was a friendly social atmosphere through out the weekend and with the events hosts the East Shrewsbury Buggy Racing Club staging a disco and karaoke in the village hall there was a great fun element to the whole weekend also.
HONG NOR and Spire Model Distribution had donated over £3,000 worth of prizes that where to be raffled at the trophy presentation on the Monday and with 2 X1CR pro Buggy’s and 2 X2-CRT pro Truggy’s being the main prizes someone was going to be very happy with there prize. Also for this event the trophy’s had been sponsored by J.E.Spares.
The East Shrewsbury club members had laid out a challenging all grass track for the weekends racing and with nearly 120 drivers attending this event and good weather forecast for the weekend everything was looking good.
On the Sunday at drivers brief it was announced that there would be 2 rounds of timed practice followed by 3 rounds of qualifying with FTD being the choice over round by round. Over the day there was some fast and close racing in all 3 classes. After the days racing had finished Team HONG Nor driver Jamie Booth had taken the TQ for the Rally-X class with his X1CR Buggy followed by Dave Blakeley with his CRONO and 3rd was Elliot Taylor.
In the Truggy class it was a close fought battle between Paul LeMessurier and Steven Bond with Paul taking the TQ from Steven and 3rd was Dave Clutterbuck.
In the CRT.5 class it was Ollie James who took the TQ from Dave clutterbuck and Dave Bird in third.
With the first days racing over the drivers got there cars ready for the next day before heading over to the village hall for the nights entertainment. When we arrived at the hall the disco was in full swing and there was a friendly happy atmosphere and after a few drinks to calm the nerves people took to the microphone for some karaoke. During the evening we would see one of the events sponsors Jamie Booth the boss of Spire Model Distribution sing 2 songs which included a classic Frank Sinatra song.
Onto the bank holiday Monday and the final days racing which would kick-off with round 4 of qualifying and there would only be one change in the classes top three and that was in rally-X where Jason Potter put in his best drive to take 3rd overall in the TQ listings so the top three in all classes was;
Class:(truggys)
PositionName Laps Time Best Round
1 Paul LeMessurier 9 5m25.7853
2 Steven Bond 9 5m26.8052
3 Dave Clutterbuck 9 5m27.6873
Class:(1/8th Rallycross)
PositionName Laps Time Best Round
1 Jamie Booth 9 5m10.4751
2 Dave Blakeley 9 5m27.2483
3 Jason Fowler 9 5m27.5664
Class:(CRT.5)
PositionName Laps Time Best Round
1 Ollie James 9 5m36.7273
2 Dave Clutterbuck 8 5m12.0971
3 Dave Bird 7 5m14.0303
So on to the finals and there was some fast close racing in all the finals leading up to the first A final of the day the CRT.5’s.
TQ man Ollie James made a mistake at the first jump this allowed Dave Clutterbuck to move into the lead. Ollie pushed hard to try and catch Dave and these 2 pulled away from third placed Dave bird. Then Dave also made a mistake allowing Ollie to retake the lead and with Dave then having a drive problem which sounded like the clutch this left Ollie to settle down and take the win over Dave Clutterbuck and Dave Bird 3rd.
Next up was the Truggy A final and this was an excellent race with Team S.M.D. driver Joe Joyce putting in the drive of the day after having a bad start he settled down and made his way back up to third with an excellent drive. Dave Clutterbuck who earlier had finished 2nd in the CRT.5 final would take the win from Steven Bond with SMD driver Joe Joyce finishing in 3rd place.
So on to the last race of the weekend the A final Rally-X where Team HONG Nor driver Jamie Booth would lead from start to finish without being challenged as would 2nd placed Dave Blakeley so this left the fight for third place between B final winner Jason Robilliard, Barry Abbott and Neil Burdess with Jason taking the spot from Barry.
J.E. Spares had donated some nice trophy’s for this event and they where handed out by Spire Model Distributions Jamie Booth before the raffle.
So on to the last event of the weekend the raffle and with over £3,000 worth of prizes to give away this would mean that most drivers would go away with a good prize.
During the raffle one of the main prize winners Dave Griffiths who won a HONG Nor X1CR pro Buggy auctioned this with the Money being donated to the Shropshire Air Ambulance and the winning bid of £100 came from Dan (The Catering Man) Taylor.
I spoke to many Drivers during the last day and many commented that they had all enjoyed the weekends racing, and that the evening’s entertainment had also helped to make this event a great success for all those who had organised the event.
So the East Shrewsbury Buggy Racing Club and the events sponsors HONG NOR, SPIRE MODEL DISTRIBUTION and J.E. SPARES can be proud of the events success and that there efforts was also appreciated by all that had attended over the weekend.
